Navigating Youth Transitions With OT

Youth transitions refer to the phase in an individual’s life where they move from being dependent children to independent adults. Youth transitions encompass a variety of changes, challenges, and opportunities that shape the path of our lives. If this sounds familiar to you, then maybe an occupational therapist can help!

Occupational therapy is a holistic approach that focuses on enabling individuals to participate in meaningful activities and achieve their goals. In the context of youth transitions, an occupational therapist can work with you or your child on a variety of skills and organize fun and educational outings to appropriate facilities to assist with daily living skills as they become more demanding at this stage in life. This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Dressing/appropriateness of clothing
  • Personal hygiene
  • Health and Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Transportation (i.e. public transportation or obtaining your license)
  • Meal preparation/cooking
  • Kitchen/home safety
  • Household chores/clean up
  • Safety awareness
  • Shopping/gift giving
  • Ordering at restaurants
  • Advanced telephone use
  • Working constructively within a peer group setting
  • Medical management (i.e. making appointments, attending appointments independently, medication management)
  • Money management
  • Resume writing
  • Job searching

If you or your child are experiencing any of the above, contact a Karp OT today. The occupational therapist can help you to gain confidence and independence in all aspects of your life including self-care, work, school, community mobility and navigation, etc.
